RAINFOREST SLOTH DISCOVERY & WATERFALL SWIM
Overview
Most visitors have sloths on their Costa Rica bucket list. Since these slow-moving cuties don’t love the dry heat of Guanacaste, we will head to the rainforest near Tenorio Volcano National Park to search for these elusive animals in their natural habitat. This area is rich with flora and fauna and visitors can search for white-faced monkeys, anteaters, pumas, tapirs, and peccaries. This tour also includes a stop at the beautiful Llanos de Cortez Waterfall. This cascading waterfall has easy access from the parking area and a shallow entry to the pool at the base of the falls. White-faced monkeys and howler monkeys can often be seen in the trees surrounding the falls.
STOP #1 – Wade into the shallow waters at the base of Llanos de Cortez Waterfall. Watch the trees surrounding this cascading waterfall for monkeys – both White-Faced Capuchin and Howler monkeys hang out in the trees. You can swim in the clear waters at the base of the waterfall and check out the pyrite flecks (Fool’s Gold) in the sand.
STOP #2 – After arriving at the town of Bijagua, you’ll take a guided nature walk on a private reserve to observe animals in their natural habitat. Monkeys, frogs, butterflies, birds, and, of course, sloths! The walk is not a difficult one and you’ll be able to take your time and enjoy the beauty of the area along the way.
STOP #3 – Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant (called a ‘Soda’) and meander through a small butterfly conservatory to see different types of butterflies, including the Blue Morpho butterfly – the most recognized butterflies in all of Costa Rica.
