RINCON VOLCANO HIKE & HOT SPRINGS
Overview
Quickly becoming one of our more popular volcano tours! Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Guanacaste province. This enormous volcanic range is 600,000 years old and has 9 volcanic craters and 30+ rivers that flow from it. While many visitors to Costa Rica flock to see Arenal Volcano, Rincon de la Vieja Volcano provides you the opportunity to actually see, feel and smell an active volcano!
This beautiful area is just an hour from Playas del Coco and offers an easy 3.5km (2.5 miles) hike through the tropical forest to spot wildlife and get up close to the area’s volcanic activity. The trail features steaming fumaroles, mini-geysers, bubbling volcanic mud pits, natural hot springs, and a seasonal waterfall. This up-close experience helps you truly appreciate the awesome power of this amazing neighbor! The park is home to 300 bird species and many mammals, including white-faced, howler, and spider monkeys, armadillos, collared peccaries, pumas, white-nosed coatis, agoutis, and more!
After your hike, you’ll stop to relax in the hot springs that are drawn from the heated volcanic rivers. You can also indulge in a volcanic mud treatment, hop in the Rio Colorado for a refreshing swim, and enjoy a full lunch.
NOTE: The hike is on a well-marked and well-maintained trail. On the second half of the looped trail, there are stairs and elevation changes making this an easy to moderate hike.
